Description: The national transport design centre (ntdc) is a state-of-the-art facility, operating within Coventry University’s Institute for Future Transport and Cities. The ntdc explores 1) the technological, environmental and societal factors which influence vehicle, transport system and infrastructure design and 2) how that understanding is articulated using both physical and digital tools and technologies. The 1800m2 facility is based around a large design studio, equipped with state of the art technology including a 15m clay milling facility, a 6m wide 3D immersive virtual reality power wall and a 3D Projection Mapping system, as well as a multitude of other modelling technologies. The ntdc draws on cross-disciplinary teams of engineers, scientist, and designers, to help address the future needs of design in the transport industry, including the rail, aerospace, marine and automotive sectors. The ntdc not only informs teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels but also acts as a focal point for engaging industry , helping them, through access to both facilities and expertise, to utilise design more effectively as a source of future competitive advantage.
